German translation of The Debunking Handbook

Posted on 26 February 2012 by John Cook

Over the last few months since being launched, The Debunking Handbook has exceeded all expectations and been downloaded over 465,000 times (there'll be a betting pool to guess when it will overtake the Guide to Skepticism which is at 822,000 downloads). Interestingly, it's also received some mainstream press attention in Germany. So it's fitting that the Handbook has now been translated into German. Many thanks to Bärbel Winkler and Oliver Marchand for their contributions to the translation.

Update Nov 21, 2020: This handbook has been superceded by a new edition. See here for more information!

Comments 1 to 3:

  1. John, Is it the first Debunking Handbook translation? I haven't seen any translations on SkS so far, unless I missed them... Is it really true that "some mainstream press attention in Germany" triggered that translation? If so, irrellevant to the book itself, it would indicate the power of the press. Even an excellent, award winning website, hardly draws in anyone (relatively speaking) to its content. However, give some content a right bit of spin in tabloid press and readers & translations start multiplying.

  2. chriskoz - Actually, we had already almost finished the German translation when we learned that the iPad app of a big German newspaper (Süddeutsche Zeitung) published an article about The Debunking Handbook. The article was therefore based on the English version as the German translation wasn't quite ready yet for publication.

  3. Indeed, my guess that "a press attention in Germany triggered that translation" was a silly one. Thanks for your hard work of letting German speaking people know this useful work.
