Presence or absence of stabilizing Earth system feedbacks on different time scales Arnscheidt and Rothman confirm the stabilizing effect of carbonate geochemistry on Earth's climate, at least on "short" timescales. More provocatively: "We have shown that the observations are inconsistent with a dominant stabilizing feedback on the longest time scales and suggested that those fluctuations arise because of weathering acting as a climate forcing (for example, when tectonic processes change the availability of weatherable rocks). Another option is that fluctuations grow on long time scales because of unknown destabilizing feedbacks. In either case, the key question is: Are there any mechanisms in the Earth system that prevent these kinds of fluctuations from eventually driving surface temperature into an uninhabitable regime?" Get past the embedded cliffhanger by reading the paper.
Asymmetric emergence of low-to-no snow in the midlatitudes of the American Cordillera A familiar story: people in the southern hemisphere will be more heavily impacted by climate change than those in the north, despite being relatively scanty contributors to the root cause of the problem. Here we're speaking of vanishing water resources. Let alone humans, Rhoades et al. point out that ecological systems will also be degraded.
Climate models fail to capture strengthening wintertime North Atlantic jet and impacts on Europe Blackport & Fyfe describe the meat of the problem they're investigating: "Here, we show that over the period from 1951 to 2020, the wintertime North Atlantic jet has strengthened, while model trends are, on average, only very weakly positive. The observed strengthening is greater than in any one of the 303 simulations from 44 climate models considered in our study. This divergence between models and observations is now much more apparent because of a very strong jet observed over the past decade." The authors assess natural variabilty as culprit and find it unlikely, with further scrutiny suggesting that models are failing to capture some degree of anthropenic effects. The oversight has important implications for projections that steer adaptation planning, etc.
African perspectives on climate change research "The countries of Africa have contributed comparatively little to anthropogenic emissions, yet the continent feels the impacts of global warming in many different ways, with changes in hydroclimate, biodiversity and wildfire dynamics already visible today. These changes happen simultaneously with considerable societal and economic transformations in many countries." Here African researchers describe their preoccupations: scientific questions of especial interest to a continent facing huge and increasingly urgent challenges from climate change.

Discrepancies between observations and climate models of large-scale wind-driven Greenland melt influence sea-level rise projections In Nature Communications Dániel Topál & crew dive into fascinating details in their exploration of a mismatch between models and reality. Some surprising facts about the effects of wind on ice are revealed. More concerningly, given the conclusions of the paper our projections are likely to be missing a fairly significant proportion of Greenland's expected contribution to sea level rise.

Articles/Reports from Agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations Addressing Aspects of Climate Change
Global Landscape of Climate Finance. A Decade of Data: 2011-2020, Naran et al., Climate Policy Initiative
The past decade saw growing momentum, where public and private climate finance almost doubled between 2011 and 2020. However, reaching climate objectives will require climate investment to increase at least seven times by the end of this decade as well as the alignment of all other financial flows with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
Climate Security in Mainland Southeast Asia: A Scenarios-Based Assessment, John Litchfield, THe Center for Climate and Security
The states of Mainland Southeast Asia—Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam—are extremely vulnerable to climate change impacts, owing to their geographic situation and heterogeneous levels of internal development. Regional populations are already experiencing the first-order physical consequences of a changing climate, including an increased frequency of extreme weather events, higher mean temperatures, decreased weather predictability, and rising sea levels. Beyond these immediately observable consequences, an array of cascading second-order effects is likely to emerge over the coming years, as the region’s inhabitants are forced to cope with unstable agricultural conditions, declining freshwater availability, and increasing energy costs. The future of mainland Southeast Asia’s development, as well as its overall stability and security, will be determined in large part by the vulnerabilities and resilience of its constituent states, as well as the willingness of governments in the region to work together and with global partners to mitigate climate risks before consequences are imminent and unavoidable.
Japan’s Dirty Secret: World’s top fossil fuel financier is fueling climate chaos and undermining energy security, Arima et al., Oil Change International
Japan is the world’s largest public financier for fossil fuel projects, providing an annual average of $10.6 billion USD between 2019 and 2021. Japan is the world’s largest financier of gas, spending an average of $6.7 billion a year. As part of the G7, Japan committed to ending international public finance for unabated fossil fuels by the end of 2022, except in limited circumstances. Japan’s support for fossil fuels and false solutions – including gas, hydrogen, and ammonia co-firing, and carbon capture and storage – is fueling the climate crisis, harming communities and ecosystems, and facing rising opposition.
New England’s Climate Imperative: Our Forests as a Natural Climate Solution, Meyer et al., Highstead
New England forests are a critical yet underutilized tool in fighting climate change. They store massive amounts of carbon—and each year they sequester more. Despite the work the forests are already doing to keep CO2 out of the atmosphere, they could do substantially more. As New England states work to meet its' 2050 goals for reducing emissions, the relative importance of forest-based mitigation will grow. The authors identify five distinct but complementary pathways that illustrate how New England forests can do even more to tackle climate change. By implementing these five pathways, especially if done together, New England can advance conservation and increase the climate mitigation potential of forests.
State of the Climate in Asia 2021, Op et al., World Meteorological Organization
The authors provide a summary of the current climate, extreme events and their socio-economic impacts in the Asia region in 2021. The mean temperature over Asia was cooler than the warmest previous year (2020), but it was still between the fifth and seventh warmest year on record, at an estimated 0.86 [0.75–1.02] °C above the 1981–2010 average (1.41 [1.33–1.47] °C above the WMO 1961–1990 reference period for climate change). The mean temperature anomaly over Asia was larger than the global anomaly of 0.42 [0.39–0.47] °C above the 1981–2010 average. Precipitation was below normal in the western Asia subregion. Reduced rainfall and less snowpack development affected water availability for crops, reducing production.
Priorities for California’s Water. Thriving with Less, Mount et al., Public Policy Institute of California, Water Policy Center
The authors consider the state of water in California: What changes are we seeing now, and what should be expected in the near future? Then they examine how these climate shifts will impact urban and rural communities, agriculture, and the environment. Finally, they explore wet-year strategies that will help Californians get through the dry years.
Atlas of Disaster, Amy Chester and Johanna Lawton, Rebuild by Design
Ninety percent of U.S. counties have experienced a federal climate disaster between 2011-2021, with some having as many as 12 disasters during that time. In 2021 alone, the U.S. experienced 20 separate billion-dollar climate disasters with over 688 direct or indirect fatalities. In order to address the worsening impacts of climate change and head off future damages, bold action is needed. Governments must work alongside communities and cross-sector partners to identify infrastructure investments that will drive physical, social, and ecological co-benefits and create hundreds of thousands of middle-class jobs – before climate events strike, not after communities have suffered. Using a co-creation process with stakeholders, states can deliver new, upgraded, innovative, and climate- ready infrastructure that protects communities in the face of climate vulnerabilities; work to make existing investments more resilient, and creates a new source for “local match” to leverage additional federal funding opportunities. Investing in climate infrastructure will bring short and long-term benefits to both the state and the community where projects are implemented by creating new jobs and seeding new local industries, improving community physical and mental health outcomes, protecting and enhancing ecosystems, and providing a framework for future investments.
Obtaining articles without journal subscriptions
We know it's frustrating that many articles we cite here are not free to read. One-off paid access fees are generally astronomically priced, suitable for such as "On a Heuristic Point of View Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light" but not as a gamble on unknowns. With a median world income of US$ 9,373, for most of us US$ 42 is significant money to wager on an article's relevance and importance.
- Here's an excellent collection of tips and techniques for obtaining articles, legally.
- Unpaywall offers a browser extension for Chrome and Firefox that automatically indicates when an article is freely accessible and provides immediate access without further trouble. Unpaywall is also unscammy, works well, is itself offered free to use. The organizers (a legitimate nonprofit) report about a 50% success rate
- The weekly New Research catch is checked against the Unpaywall database with accessible items being flagged. Especially for just-published articles this mechansim may fail. If you're interested in an article title and it is not listed here as "open access," be sure to check the link anyway.
How is New Research assembled?
Most articles appearing here are found via RSS feeds from journal publishers, filtered by search terms to produce raw output for assessment of relevance.
Relevant articles are then queried against the Unpaywall database, to identify open access articles and expose useful metadata for articles appearing in the database.
The objective of New Research isn't to cast a tinge on scientific results, to color readers' impressions. Hence candidate articles are assessed via two metrics only:
- Was an article deemed of sufficient merit by a team of journal editors and peer reviewers? The fact of journal RSS output assigns a "yes" to this automatically.
- Is an article relevant to the topic of anthropogenic climate change? Due to filter overlap with other publication topics of inquiry, of a typical week's 550 or so input articles about 1/4 of RSS output makes the cut.
The section "Informed opinion, nudges & major initiatives" includes some items that are not scientific research per se but fall instead into the category of "perspectives," observations of implications of research findings, areas needing attention, etc.
