Even as the atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration climbs upward, some climate deniers are bent on attacking climate scientists’ reputations. That's why it's more important than ever that we empower climate scientists to keep doing the stellar work they do, the work that makes climate change activism possible.

SkS Highlights
John Abram's The gutting of CSIRO climate change research is a big mistake and Dana's No climate conspiracy: NOAA temperature adjustments bring data closer to pristine each attracted the highest number of comments of the articles posted on SkS during the past week
El Niño's Duration
El Niño is forecast to weaken through the spring with conditions in the equatorial Pacific Ocean potentially transitioning to La Niña next fall, according to the latest monthly outlook issued Thursday by NOAA.

Quote of the Week
"Carbon pollution from the electric sector has been declining over the past several years," said Joanne Spalding, chief climate counsel of the Sierra Club. "And as we transition from dirty fossil energy to clean renewable energy that trend will continue independent of the Clean Power Plan."
"The Supreme Court's order staying the plan will not affect our ability to achieve our international commitments," she said.

He Said What?
CSIRO head Larry Marshall has sought to defend deep cuts to climate science programs after days of sustained criticism, saying global warming research was "one piece of a much larger puzzle" in solving Australia's biggest challenges.

SkS in the News
More important may be the “consensus gap” – the mismatch between those who think the science isn’t settled and the reality that it is. While there is a 97 per cent consensus among experts that climate change is primarily human caused, seven in 10 teachers put the figure at less than 80 per cent.

SkS Spotlights
Founded by legendary conservationist John Muir in 1892, the Sierra Club is now the nation's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization — with more than two million members and supporters. Our successes range from protecting millions of acres of wilderness to helping pass the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and Endangered Species Act. More recently, we've made history by leading the charge to move away from the dirty fossil fuels that cause climate disruption and toward a clean energy economy.
